If you’re drawn to authentic candid wedding photographs over posed portraits, or prefer a mix of both, then consider hiring a photographer with an editorial skill set. As a documentary-style wedding photographer in DC, I have seen how much impact this type of photography can have. My couples always mention that the non-posed, real moments that I captured from their wedding are their favorites.
The power lies in that documentary-style wedding photography brings you back to the genuine emotions you were feeling, making your memories of your wedding day more vivid and real. It’s as if you are reliving your wedding as it truly happened.
These photographs from Maria and Kevin’s wedding at The Belvedere & Co Events illustrate the benefits of choosing a documentary style wedding photographer.
The first moments of Maria getting ready were a chance for me to photograph her and the unique historic architectural details of the room. They are not all candid photographs, but they serve to document how she looked and was feeling during that time.
The portraits of Maria and Kevin were done in their ceremony space, the historic 1900 John Eager Howard Ballroom. I used the hand-painted scenes of early Baltimore as a dramatic backdrop and allowed them to be themselves as they genuinely interacted with each other. Afterwards, I kept photographing them as they walked to the Owl Bar for more photographs.
Their ceremony in the Howard Ballroom was full of dramatic opportunities to document the emotions from not only Maria and Kevin, but from family members as well. Before their reception, I followed them up to the bridal suite to photograph them signing their marriage license.
It’s not unusual to see a lot of emotion when the speeches/toasts are offered up to the bride and groom and there was no exception at Maria and Kevin’s reception as both of their parents gave heart-felt speeches and well wishes. It’s at this time when I’m on the lookout for those in between candid expressions.
The view from the 13th floor venue space at night was spectacular with the skyscrapers and statues in downtown Baltimore all lit up in holiday lights. Documentary wedding photography does not always have to be of people. It’s the nuances like this night photo shot through the window that also serve to bring back everything to them from the event.
Their wedding was a beautiful testament to the power of documentary-style wedding photography. By focusing on genuine moments and emotions, I created a visual narrative that will help them reminisce for years to come.
If you’re planning your wedding in the Washington, D.C., area and desire a photography style that authentically captures your unique love story, consider the documentary approach for your photos to show your entire day as it truly unfolds.
