If you’re reading this, chances are you’re on the hunt to find a great city location for your engagement photo session. That’s why I’m revealing my pick for what I consider to be the best spot for indoor engagement photos in DC – the Library of Congress.
The Library of Congress is an overlooked location for engagement photos because most couples usually think about doing their photos near the monuments in Washington, DC, like the Lincoln Memorial or the Jefferson which require purchasing a permit. Not only does the Library of Congress not require a photography permit, the building offers more historic architecture, both indoors and outside, that in my opinion, make for a much more interesting and dramatic backdrop for your engagement photos.
As the largest library in the world, with millions of books, films and video, audio recordings, photographs, newspapers, maps and manuscripts in its collections, the Library of Congress is the main research arm of the U.S. Congress and the home of the U.S. Copyright Office.
Construction of this historic building began in 1886 when after two design competitions and a decade of debate about design and location, Congress finally chose an Italian Renaissance plan submitted by Washington architects John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz.
As you walk in, you’re immediately impressed with the large scale interior that’s made up of marble, granite, iron, and bronze. This grand design was based on the Paris Opera House and features beautiful renaissance murals and writings.
And outside across from the Capitol Building, it is equally as majestic. A monumental split staircase is in front of the main entrance.
The elevator is ornate, almost art deco like, with gold bars inside and is a romantic spot to grab a kiss.
The long arched windows provide an ample amount of natural light.
An added bonus, if you’re up for more, is to walk down Independence Ave SW to the Bartholdi Fountain and Gardens adjacent to the U.S. Botanical Gardens.
You’ll need to register online for a free timed entry pass into the Thomas Jefferson Building of the library. They are available Tuesday – Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The last pass is given out at 4:30 p.m. If possible, avoid Fridays or Saturdays as these days usually attract larger crowds.
